Auburndale Intramural Development League — youth recreational soccer in Queens, NY
Intramural · Youth Recreational Soccer

Where Queens Kids Fall in Love With Soccer.

Auburndale's Intramural Development League is the bedrock of the club — a no-tryout, no-cut, co-ed recreational youth soccer program for Queens kids ages 6–14. Eight-week Spring and Fall seasons. Friday training, Sunday games at Cunningham Park.

Why Recreational Soccer

Every Queens Kid Gets to Play. Every Single Season.

Auburndale's Intramural Development League is a forty-nine-year-old in-house recreational youth soccer program — built around fun, fundamentals, and getting every kid on the field, regardless of skill level.

No tryouts. No-cut policy.

Open registration every Spring and Fall. No auditions, no rejections. Every Queens kid who registers is placed on a team and plays — full stop.

Eight-week seasons

Manageable, finite commitments. Eight weeks in Spring, eight weeks in Fall. Try one season without signing on for a year — most families come back for the next.

Co-ed, all skill levels

Boys and girls play together. First-time beginners line up next to kids on their second or third season. The program is built around US Soccer Grassroots fundamentals — beginner-friendly and challenging for advanced players in the same session.

Equal playing time

Substantial playing time for every player, regardless of ability. No bench-warming. Equal playing time is how you actually develop a young soccer player.

Balanced random teams

Players are randomly placed on teams each season for balance and fairness. Different teammates each cycle means new friendships every season — nobody is stuck on a team that isn't a fit.

The pathway to Travel

Plenty of current Premier Travel players started in Intramural. When a kid is ready to compete, the next step is built right into Auburndale — not a different club, not a different system.

Player Development

What Eight Weeks of Intramural Actually Builds.

Intramural follows US Soccer Federation Grassroots development guidelines. Every Friday training is structured around the fundamentals that turn kids into actual soccer players — not just kids running after a ball.

Ball mastery basics

First-touch, dribbling under pressure, simple turns. Reps every Friday — the foundation every developing soccer player needs.

Passing & receiving

Short passing, body shape on the receive, awareness before the pass arrives. The "easy" stuff that determines whether a young player keeps developing.

Game awareness

Where to be without the ball. How to read the field. Small-sided games that force kids to start thinking before they kick.

Confidence on the ball

Most young players don't lack ability — they lack reps and the confidence to try. Intramural creates the low-stakes environment where confidence actually gets built.

Teamwork & sportsmanship

Random teams every season teaches kids how to be a teammate to anyone, not just their best friends. Sportsmanship is coached actively — not assumed.

Have-fun-first philosophy

Kids who love soccer keep playing. Auburndale's Intramural philosophy is direct: prioritize fun, then development, then results. In that order. Every season.

Commitment

What Intramural Asks of Your Family.

The Intramural commitment is intentionally low. Two days a week, eight weeks at a time, one location — designed to fit around school, siblings, and Sunday family time.

FAQ

Recreational Youth Soccer in Queens — Frequently Asked Questions.

What is the difference between intramural and travel soccer?
Intramural (recreational) soccer is local, lower-cost, and built around fun and learning. Auburndale Intramural is co-ed, eight-week Spring and Fall seasons, no tryout, all skill levels, and runs at one Queens park. Travel (competitive) soccer is the next level up — year-round, tryout-based, USSF-licensed coaching, regional league play, and out-of-state tournament weekends. Most Auburndale families start with Intramural; some kids progress to Travel when they're ready.
Does my child need experience to join the intramural program?
No experience required. Auburndale Intramural is built for every level — beginner-friendly for first-time players and challenging for advanced players in the same session. The no-cut policy means anyone who registers is placed on a team, regardless of skill level.
What equipment does my player need for practice and games?
Mandatory gear for every practice and game: soccer cleats, shin guards (worn under the socks), a soccer ball, and a water bottle. Ball size: size 4 for ages 6–11, size 5 for ages 12–14. The Auburndale Intramural uniform kit ($56) is required for all players — new players add it at checkout; returning players use last season's kit.
How are teams formed for the recreational league?
Teams are formed randomly each season for balance and fairness. There are no tryouts and no coach-pick rosters in Intramural. The intent is balanced play across teams and a fresh mix of teammates every cycle.
What is the time commitment for the season?
Two days a week for eight weeks per season. Friday-evening training sessions and Sunday-afternoon recreational games (12:00 PM or 1:00 PM kickoff). Spring and Fall run independently — you can register for one or both. The program includes one make-up session per season if needed.
Where does Auburndale Intramural play?
All Intramural practices and games run at Cunningham Park — the 73rd Avenue field complex, between 210th Street and Hollis Hills Terrace (Clearview Expressway), Queens, NY. One location, no driving between fields.
When does Intramural registration close?
Auburndale Intramural registration runs through the start of each Spring and Fall season. Exact open and close dates for the current cycle are posted on the events calendar. Note: there are no prorates or refunds once the season has started, so register before the kickoff weekend.
